After It Is Running

Your instance is up at http://localhost:3000. These steps take it from an empty workspace to a first post you have reviewed and approved.

1. Open your workspace

Open http://localhost:3000. With the default configuration there is no login wall: the first boot seeded one local user, one organization (slug default), and one brand, and the web UI opens straight into them.

If you turned on the login wall (BETTER_AUTH_ENABLED=true), create your account with email and password. That needs no email provider; magic links, password resets, and invites do. See Configuration.

2. Add model keys

Generation needs at least one provider key, and self-hosting has no Genfeed credits. Add your keys to .env and recreate the stack, following Provider API keys.

3. Connect an AI agent over MCP

Your instance serves MCP on port 3014. The login wall does not protect it: the MCP server always requires a bearer credential.

For Claude Code, register the dedicated content connector, then open /mcp, select genfeed, and complete browser authorization:

claude mcp add --transport http genfeed --scope user http://localhost:3014/mcp/claude

For other clients, create a scoped key and point the client at http://localhost:3014/mcp:

  1. Open http://localhost:3000/default/~/settings/api-keys.

  2. Create a key with the MCP preset and copy it once.

  3. Export it in the client’s environment, not in the Genfeed .env:

export GENFEED_API_KEY=gf_live_xxx codex mcp add genfeed --url http://localhost:3014/mcp --bearer-token-env-var GENFEED_API_KEY

Ask your agent to list your Genfeed brands. A successful answer confirms the connection. Details, toolsets, and troubleshooting are in MCP server.

4. Use the CLI against your instance

bun add -g @genfeedai/cli # needs Node.js 22.12 or newer export GENFEED_API_URL=http://localhost:3010/v1 export GENFEED_API_KEY=gf_live_xxx gf whoami

Use gf login -i instead if you would rather paste the key at a hidden prompt. See the CLI reference.

5. Install Agent Skills

Skills teach your agent the content discipline; MCP gives it the tools.

bunx skills add genfeedai/skills

See Agent Skills.

6. From a first brief to a published post

Genfeed is approval-first: an agent can generate and draft, and publishing waits for you.

  1. Give a brief. In your agent (or the web UI), describe the post: audience, topic, and format. Ask it to generate content with the brand’s voice. This uses the provider keys you added.
  2. Review the draft. Agents save drafts for review rather than publishing. Open the draft in the web UI to edit the copy and media.
  3. Approve it. Approve the draft in the app. A scoped key with the MCP preset can draft, schedule, and approve; it cannot publish directly.
  4. Connect a channel. Under Accounts → Add Account, connect a publishing channel. Each provider needs its own OAuth application and callback; see Publishing. Unconfigured providers fail closed.
  5. Publish or schedule. Publish the approved post, or schedule it for later.

Publish a non-sensitive test post first and confirm it in the provider’s own UI.
